"I was in prison and you visited me."
- Matthew 25:36

Robertson Unit is a maximum security men’s prison that is part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Many living in Abilene don’t realize that it stands just about 12 miles north of the city and houses about 3000 men. It is a major employer in our area with not quite 700 employees.

Behind those walls we call Robertson are men who are in need of the love of Jesus Christ. That is the sole purpose of our ministry.

Twice a year 42 of those men are selected to participate in a 3 1/2 day weekend. They will receive homemade food, cookies, and fresh vegetable and fruit trays as they listen to various men on our team speak of their time through darkness and how Christ changed their lives. Though our purpose is sow seed, often men will denounce the gangs and various behaviors they are involved with and give their life to Christ.

However, our team does not leave them there. Weekly they have opportunity to pray in a group and share what is going on in their lives and where they are seeing Christ. It is a chance to share their struggles and to be held accountable for choices they are currently making.

Once a month team members go in for a gathering of the Kairos community. Those who have completed a Kairos weekend can come together with team members from the “free world” for praise and worship.

If you would like to become involved, there are multiple ways you can contribute:

As a team member: We need men who are willing to go into the prison as part of a team to minister to those incarcerated but we also need men and women who don’t go in to help with the many chores on the outside. St. Paul Methodist Church has generously donated their facility to provide a staging ground for us. We do the cooking there and then someone drives the food in for each meal over the weekend. We put together packages of agape that will go into the prison as part of the weekend and we package up thousands of cookies that will be handed to every man who did not get to participate in the weekend. As you can see, it is labor-intense but what a labor of love! You will not find a greater bunch of people anywhere and we would love to have you join us.

Donations: We love the green agape! The money goes for operating expenses. No one on our team is paid. We are all volunteers. We love to receive “placemats” that have been made by children. Handmade posters that help show God’s love can be put on the walls.

Promotions: We love to talk about this ministry! If you have a group that is looking for a speaker, we would appreciate the opportunity.
